Hemp seed is the small, oil-rich seed of Cannabis sativa, harvested from industrial hemp varieties bred to contain only negligible THC, the compound that makes the drug forms of the plant psychoactive. Sold most often as shelled kernels called hemp hearts, the seeds are soft, cream-coloured and faintly green, with a mild, sweet, nutty flavour close to pine nut or sunflower seed. They are a nutritional standout — a complete plant protein carrying all the essential amino acids, a high oil content weighted toward a favourable balance of omega-6 and omega-3 fats, and generous magnesium and iron. Hemp hearts are scattered over bowls and salads, blended into hemp milk, and cold-pressed for a green, grassy, nutty oil.
