The breadnut, or Maya nut, is the seed of the ramón tree, Brosimum alicastrum — a tall rainforest tree of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean whose green fruits each hold a single large seed. Roasted, the seed tastes of chestnut and cocoa with a mealy, starchy bite; ground and brewed it makes a dark, coffee-like drink. A staple of the ancient Maya, it is quite distinct from the seed of the true breadfruit, and is also known as ojoche, ramón, ojite or capomo across its range.
