Wintergreen berry (Teaberry)

Gaultheria procumbens · Berry

The wintergreen berry, better known in North America as the teaberry, is the small, bright scarlet fruit of a low creeping woodland shrub whose leaves and berries carry the unmistakable cool, sweet, medicinal-minty flavour of methyl salicylate. Mild and mealy rather than juicy or tart, the berry is prized less for eating by the handful than for the aromatic "teaberry" note it lends — the flavour of old-fashioned teaberry gum, pink wintergreen candies, and the tingling coolness of many toothpastes and liniments.
