Vermentino is the great aromatic white grape of the Mediterranean coast, grown above all in Sardinia, Liguria and the Tuscan littoral, with a foothold in Corsica and across southern France, where it is known as Rolle. Thriving on sun-baked, sea-facing slopes, it makes a dry, medium-bodied, refreshingly crisp white scented with lemon and grapefruit, green herbs and wild Mediterranean scrub, finished with a distinctive saline tang and a signature bitter-almond grip. Its most celebrated home is Sardinia's Vermentino di Gallura, the island's only DOCG. Bright, mineral and built for the table, it is one of the world's classic seafood whites.
