Teroldego is a red wine grape of Trentino in north-east Italy, famous for the deeply coloured, juicy, lightly savoury reds of the gravelly Campo Rotaliano plain. Its small, thick-skinned berries give wines of almost opaque purple-ruby, brimming with dark berry — blackberry, black cherry and plum — over a faintly herbal, peppery, savoury edge and supple, rounded tannins. DNA research has placed it in distinguished company: it is a full sibling of France's Dureza, one of the parents of Syrah, and is itself a parent of the neighbouring Alto Adige grape Lagrein. Long the everyday red of Trentino and historically nicknamed the "prince" of the region's wines, it has won fresh attention through modern, terroir-driven producers. The result is a medium-to-full red of bright fruit, gentle structure and unusual depth of colour for its weight.
