Ribera del Duero is Spain's powerhouse Tempranillo, grown on the high, sun-baked plateau of Castile and Leon along the upper Duero, where the grape is known as Tinto Fino or Tinta del Pais. Big diurnal swings on vineyards up to around 900 metres give wines of great concentration: opaque purple-black, full-bodied and firmly tannic, with dark blackberry and black-cherry fruit, liquorice, graphite and toasty oak — denser and more muscular than the softer, red-fruited Rioja made from the same grape.
