Syrah from the Northern Rhône is the world's benchmark for savoury, medium-to-full-bodied red wine — a dark, firmly tannic, perfumed style of blackberry and cracked black pepper laced with smoked meat, olive and violet, grown on the steep granite hills of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie and Cornas.
