Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is the aristocratic, oak-aged face of Sangiovese from the hill town of Montepulciano in south-eastern Tuscany, where the grape goes by the local name Prugnolo Gentile. Firm, savoury and structured, it marries sour cherry and dried plum to tobacco, violet and leather over bright acidity and grippy, fine-grained tannin — a wine built for the table and for the cellar, not a soft fruit bomb.
