Sagrantino is a powerful, deeply coloured red wine grape native to the hill town of Montefalco in Umbria, central Italy, and one of the most tannic varieties in the world. Its small, exceptionally thick-skinned berries yield inky, near-black wines built around blackberry, black cherry and plum, with firm, mouth-coating tannin, ripe dark fruit and a savoury, spiced depth. The flagship dry wine, Sagrantino di Montefalco, is a long-lived DOCG red that demands years of bottle age to soften, while the grape's older identity is a sweet passito made from dried grapes. Once a near-forgotten local speciality, it was revived from the 1970s and is now Umbria's most celebrated red.
