Prokupac is Serbia's flagship indigenous red grape, the historic backbone of central and southern Serbian viticulture and the country's most-planted native variety. Long relegated to blending and bulk wine under socialist Yugoslavia, it has been revived since the 2000s as a serious single-varietal wine: a medium- to full-bodied dry red with bright acidity, firm but supple tannin and a savoury character of ripe red and dark cherry, dried plum, red berries and dried herbs, often with a peppery, earthy edge. Ancient, deeply rooted and newly fashionable, it has become the emblem of a resurgent Balkan wine scene.
