Alsace Pinot Gris is the grape's grandest, richest expression: a deep-golden, full-bodied white from the sheltered eastern foothills of the Vosges, grown on a patchwork of limestone, granite and volcanic soils and picked late and fully ripe. Where Italy's Pinot Grigio is lean and neutral, the Alsace style is broad, weighty and gently off-dry — ripe pear and quince, honey, baked apple and a signature smoky spice carried on a soft, glycerol-rich, almost oily texture.
