Ghemme is the alpine, high-acid face of Nebbiolo: a garnet-red DOCG from Alto Piemonte, the pre-Alpine hills north of the Langhe in the province of Novara, where the grape is known locally as Spanna. Grown on acidic, glacial-morainic and volcanic soils rather than the calcareous marl of Barolo, it trades some of the Langhe's power and weight for a leaner, fresher, more perfumed and savoury style with a distinct mineral, iron-like edge.
