Nebbiolo is the noble red grape of Piedmont in northwest Italy, the variety behind the great DOCG wines of Barolo and Barbaresco. It is famous for a paradox — a pale, garnet-to-brick colour that belies a wine of formidable power, with searing tannin, high acidity and the haunting "tar and roses" perfume that is its signature. Late-ripening and difficult to grow, it makes age-worthy wines that can evolve for decades.
