Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is the archetypal expression of the Montepulciano grape: the soft, juicy, deeply coloured everyday red of Italy's east-central Abruzzo region, running from a sun-warmed coastal plain up to the foothills of the Apennines. It is dry and medium-to-full-bodied with an inky violet hue, ripe gentle tannins and moderate acidity, bursting with black plum, dark cherry and a savoury, peppery, herbal edge — a great-value wine built for the table. It must not be confused with Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a Tuscan Sangiovese wine named for its town rather than this grape.
