Jumilla is the flagship home of Monastrell (Mourvèdre): a hot, arid, high plateau in south-eastern Spain, straddling Murcia and Albacete, that makes dark, full-bodied, warming dry reds from old dry-farmed bush vines. Sun-baked and low-cropping, these wines pack blackberry and dark plum into an earthy, gamey, herb-and-spice frame with grippy tannin and high alcohol — the muscular, sun-drenched counterpoint to France's cooler Mourvèdre.
