Saint-Émilion is the historic hilltop appellation of Bordeaux's Right Bank and, alongside neighbouring Pomerol, the classic home of Merlot — here grown on limestone and clay-limestone slopes and blended with Cabernet Franc into a plush yet structured red. Around the medieval town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the wines layer ripe plum, black cherry and blackberry over cedar, liquorice and a savoury, mineral limestone freshness, plusher than a Médoc but firmer and more lifted than a Pomerol.
