Salta is the extreme-altitude northern frontier of Argentine Malbec, home to some of the highest commercial vineyards on Earth. Grown on sun-drenched Andean benchlands between roughly 1,500 and 3,000 metres, in the Calchaquí Valleys around the town of Cafayate, it is a deeply coloured, intensely floral, powerfully concentrated red — more perfumed, more structured and firmer-tannined than the plush Malbec of Mendoza to the south.
