Malbec is a thick-skinned, dark-fruited red grape that makes inky, full-bodied wines of deep purple-black colour, ripe plum and blackberry fruit and supple to robust tannins. Once a workhorse of Bordeaux and the heart of the "black wine" of Cahors in southwest France, it found its truest home in the high-altitude vineyards of Mendoza, Argentina, where it became the country's flagship variety. The style runs from rustic, savoury and firmly tannic in Cahors to plush, fruit-forward and velvety in Argentina. It is the umbrella grape under which its great regional expressions — Mendoza and Cahors — sit.
