Lagrein is a dark, indigenous red wine grape of Alto Adige (Sudtirol) and neighbouring Trentino in the far north of Italy, where it has been grown for centuries on the warm valley floors around Bolzano. Deeply pigmented and naturally tannic, it makes inky, full-bodied reds built around dark berry, plum and bitter chocolate, framed by high acidity and a faintly bitter, almost savoury edge that is part of its signature. An old variety closely tied to Teroldego, it is the proud local grape of South Tyrol, bottled most often as the structured red Lagrein Dunkel (Scuro) and, in a lighter mood, as the pale, fragrant Lagrein Kretzer rosato. Long a regional speciality, it has grown into one of the Alps' most distinctive native reds.
