Montsant is the ring of old-vine Garnacha country that wraps almost entirely around Priorat in southern Catalonia — the same rugged, sun-baked mountain landscape and much of the same DNA, but at gentler prices. Its reds are Garnacha-led (usually with Cariñena), warm and generous with ripe raspberry, blackberry and fig, framed by garrigue herbs, a whiff of liquorice and a mineral, sometimes slaty grip. Softer and more approachable than powerhouse Priorat yet cut from the same cloth, Montsant is widely regarded as one of Spain's great-value red appellations.
