Greco di Tufo is a full-bodied white wine from the volcanic hills of Avellino in Campania, southern Italy, made principally from the ancient Greco grape grown around the village of Tufo. Elevated to DOCG status in 2003, it is one of southern Italy's most serious whites: structured, mineral and notably age-worthy, built on a core of yellow stone fruit, citrus and a flinty, sulphur-tinged minerality drawn from the tuff-and-sulphur soils that give the town and the wine their name. Where many Italian whites are made to drink young and light, Greco di Tufo is broad, firm and savoury, with the body and acidity to develop in bottle over a decade. It is the classic match for the seafood, shellfish and rich vegetable dishes of the Campanian table.
