Grechetto is central Italy's signature white wine grape, the aromatic heart of Umbria and a defining component of the historic wine of Orvieto. Thick skinned and slow to ripen, it gives medium-bodied whites of gentle nutty character — pear, white peach and a distinctive almond bite — carried on crisp acidity and a chalky, stony minerality that speaks of its volcanic and clay soils. It is a versatile grape, bottled as a crisp dry varietal, blended into the fresh whites of Orvieto and the Colli Martani, and even dried for the prized sweet Vin Santo of the region. Textured yet bright, subtly savoury yet fruit-friendly, it is the quietly confident face of Italian white wine from the green heart of the peninsula.
