Morgon is the brawny, age-worthy face of Gamay: one of the ten crus of Beaujolais, at the granite southern tip of Burgundy, whose wines are deeper, darker and more structured than everyday Beaujolais. Grown largely on the manganese-rich decomposed schist of the Côte du Py, it trades the light, candied lift of young Beaujolais for concentrated dark cherry and kirsch over an earthy, almost Pinot-like depth that firms with a few years in bottle.
