Vittoria is the appellation where Frappato stands alone. Created in 2005 on the sandy south-eastern corner of Sicily, the Vittoria DOC bottles the grape as a varietal — at least 85 percent Frappato — rather than as the perfumed minority partner it plays in the neighbouring Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG. The wine is pale, barely tannic and startlingly aromatic: wild strawberry and red cherry over violet and rose, with high acidity, modest weight and a peppery herbal lift. It is one of Italy's great chillable reds.
