Franciacorta is Italy's flagship traditional-method sparkling wine: a bottle-fermented blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Nero and Pinot Bianco from the Franciacorta hills south of Lake Iseo in Lombardy, made by the same metodo classico used for Champagne. It carries DOCG status, Italy's highest wine classification, and is defined by fine, persistent bubbles, bright acidity and toasty, biscuity autolytic complexity from long ageing on the lees. Often described as Italy's answer to Champagne, it is the country's most serious sparkling wine and the benchmark against which other Italian metodo-classico wines are judged.
