Fiano is an ancient white grape of southern Italy's Campania region, the backbone of the celebrated Fiano di Avellino DOCG in the hills behind Naples. It yields a textured, structured and unusually age-worthy white — fuller and more savoury than most Italian whites — built around honey, toasted hazelnut, ripe pear and a herbal, faintly smoky edge. Its medium-to-high acidity keeps that richness fresh and gives the wine the spine to develop in bottle for years. Long overlooked and nearly lost, Fiano was revived in the late twentieth century and is now regarded as one of Italy's finest and most distinctive white varieties.
