Dornfelder is a German red wine grape created in 1955 — a deliberate crossing that has grown into Germany's second most planted red variety. It was bred to give German reds the one thing they often lacked: deep, saturated colour. The wine it makes is intensely dark, soft and juicy, built around dark berry fruit — blackberry, plum, cherry and sour cherry — with a fair acidity and gentle, low tannins that make it easy and approachable. Most often vinified dry or just off-dry, it is the friendly, fruit-forward face of German red wine, crowd-pleasing and meant to be drunk young.
