Barbera d'Asti is the benchmark expression of the Barbera grape, made in the Monferrato hills around the town of Asti in Piedmont, northwest Italy, and promoted to Italy's top quality tier, DOCG, in 2008. It is a deeply coloured, juicy red built on vivid, mouth-watering acidity, low and supple tannin and a generous core of ripe red cherry and plum. Bright, savoury and exceptionally food-friendly, it is a classic match for tomato-based dishes and the everyday red of the Piedmontese table. Styles range from fresh and unoaked to richer, barrel-aged and age-worthy wines, including the superior Nizza sub-zone.
