Barbera d'Alba is the riper, fleshier face of the Barbera grape, grown in the Langhe hills around the town of Alba in Piedmont, northwest Italy — the same warm, calcareous country that gives Nebbiolo its Barolo and Barbaresco. It is a deeply coloured, juicy red built on vivid, mouth-watering acidity and low, soft tannin, with a generous core of ripe black cherry and plum that is more concentrated and often more oak-shaped than its lighter cousin Barbera d'Asti.
