Agiorgitiko is Greece's signature red wine grape and the sole variety of the Nemea appellation in the north-eastern Peloponnese, where it is sometimes called the "Blood of Hercules." Among the most widely planted red grapes in the country, it is prized for its versatility and soft, approachable charm: deeply coloured, supple and moderately tannic, with ripe plum, black cherry and red-fruit aromas lifted by a characteristic sweet spice. The same grape is coaxed into a whole spectrum of styles — fresh young reds and rosés, structured oak-aged reds built to age, and even sweet sun-dried dessert wines. Easy to enjoy yet capable of real depth, it is the friendly, food-loving face of Greek red wine.
