Widow's Kiss
The Widow's Kiss is a rich, spirit-forward autumn classic built on apple brandy and two French monastic herbal liqueurs. The original spec is Calvados or apple brandy fortified with yellow Chartreuse and Bénédictine and laced with Angostura bitters, stirred and served up in a coupe. Deep amber and unmistakably herbal, it is one of the great cold-weather sippers of the nineteenth-century American bar.

Deep amber, the Widow's Kiss smells of warm baked apple and honeyed yellow Chartreuse over the spiced, faintly medicinal depth of Bénédictine and the baking-spice lift of Angostura. On the palate it is rich and sweet — layered honey, saffron and a garden of herbs riding over an orchard-fruit apple-brandy backbone — held in check by the dry spirit and a bracing dash of aromatic bitters. It is viscous, warming and intensely herbal, finishing long and spiced at around 30 percent alcohol in the glass.
