Whiskey Smash
The Whiskey Smash is a classic bourbon sour crossed with a julep — fresh lemon and mint muddled with simple syrup, shaken with bourbon and poured over crushed ice, then crowned with a fragrant mint sprig. Bright, herbaceous and refreshing, it is a summer porch-drink in the Jerry Thomas tradition: a smash, meaning spirit pounded together with fruit, sugar and mint.

Hazy gold over crushed ice, the Whiskey Smash smells first of fresh-cut lemon and cool, green mint, with warm vanilla, caramel and toasted-oak bourbon rising underneath. On the palate it is bright and tart on the front, cooled and lifted by herbaceous mint through the middle, and gently sweetened by the simple syrup, all carried on the soft corn-and-vanilla warmth of the bourbon. It finishes clean and refreshing, lightly diluted from the ice, tart and minty rather than boozy, at around 18 percent alcohol in the glass.
