Triticale

×Triticosecale · Grain

Triticale (×Triticosecale) is a man-made cereal grain bred by crossing wheat (Triticum) with rye (Secale cereale), the first crop genus deliberately created by humans. It was designed to marry wheat's higher yield and milling and bread quality with rye's toughness on poor, cold and dry soils, giving a plump amber-brown kernel that is nutty, faintly sweet and mildly earthy. Grown mostly for animal feed and forage, it is also milled into flour for breads, flatbreads and porridge and is a high-protein, high-fibre whole grain.
