The Tequila Sunrise is a tall, built tequila-and-orange-juice cocktail named for its look: a splash of grenadine poured in last sinks to the bottom and bleeds slowly up through the juice, leaving a red-to-orange gradient like a sunrise. It is a simple, sweet-tart highball — bright orange juice over a measure of tequila, with the pomegranate grenadine adding colour and a fruity edge — and one of the defining cocktails of the early 1970s. The modern three-ingredient version is the one most people know, and it is built straight in the glass and left unstirred so the gradient holds.
