Switchel — also called haymaker's punch, ginger-water or swizzle — is a thirst-quenching drink of water, vinegar, fresh ginger and a sweetener such as honey, molasses or maple syrup, served cold. Tart, gingery and faintly sweet, it was the classic field drink given to farmhands bringing in the hay before bottled soft drinks existed.
