Swedish Punsch

Swedish Punsch is a sweet, spiced Scandinavian liqueur built on Batavia arrack — the funky Indonesian sugarcane-and-red-rice spirit — blended with tea, citrus, spice and sugar, bottled at around twenty-five percent alcohol by volume; malty and faintly barnyard-funky beneath a warm, sweet-spiced surface, it is drunk hot or cold in Sweden and prized by bartenders as a classic-cocktail modifier.

Sweet and syrupy on the palate, Swedish Punsch opens with warm baking spice — clove, cinnamon and cardamom — over a marmalade-like orange-and-lemon brightness and the tannic perfume of black tea, but its signature is the funky, malty, faintly barnyard hogo of Batavia arrack humming underneath, a rummy-and-fermented note that keeps the sweetness from cloying. The alcohol is gentle for a spirit-derived drink at around a quarter ABV, the texture rounded and viscous, and the finish lingers sweet-spiced with that unmistakable arrack funk and a light bitter-tea edge. Served warm the spice blooms; chilled, the citrus and funk sharpen.
