Suffering Bastard

The Suffering Bastard is a long, fizzy WWII-era restorative — gin and brandy sharpened with fresh lime and Angostura bitters, built over ice and topped with ginger beer. Served in a mug or Collins glass with a mint sprig, it is a spicy, citrusy highball invented as a hangover cure in wartime Cairo and famous as much for its name as for its long, cooling drinkability.

Long and amber in a frosted mug, the Suffering Bastard smells of peppery ginger beer and fresh-cut lime over the dry pine of gin, a grapey brandy warmth and the clove-and-cinnamon aromatic bite of Angostura, all lifted by a cool sprig of mint. On the palate it is spicy and citrusy — a warming, faintly sweet ginger fizz set against bright lime acidity and a gentle bitter-aromatic edge — effervescent and cooling, drinking far more easily than its two-spirit base at around 14 percent alcohol in the glass, with a peppery, refreshing finish that made it a legendary morning-after restorative.
