The alpine strawberry, known in French as fraise des bois or strawberry of the woods, is the cultivated form of the wild woodland strawberry, a different species from the familiar garden fruit. It is a tiny, slender, deeply conical berry, often no longer than a fingertip and a fraction of the weight of a supermarket strawberry, that ripens to an intense deep red and carries a concentrated, perfumed, sweet-tart wild aroma far stronger than its size suggests.
