Starfruit, or carambola (Averrhoa carambola), is the waxy, ridged, golden-yellow fruit of a small tropical tree, named for the five-pointed star that appears when it is sliced across its deep longitudinal ribs. The whole fruit is crisp and very juicy, with thin edible skin and no need for peeling, and tastes brightly sweet-tart and faintly grassy — somewhere between apple, grape and citrus. Eaten fresh out of hand, sliced raw into salads and drinks, or laid on as a decorative garnish, it is a fruit of Southeast Asia now grown across the humid tropics.
