The sloe is the small, blue-black drupe of the blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), a thorny shrub of European hedgerows. Fiercely sour and mouth-drying with tannin, it is almost inedible raw but prized for flavouring sloe gin, country wines, jellies and preserves.
