The Sidecar is a classic brandy cocktail of the sour and daisy family, built from cognac, orange liqueur and fresh lemon juice, shaken hard and strained ice-cold into a stemmed cocktail glass. It is one of the great drinks to come out of the years around the First World War — an amber, citrus-bright sour that is essentially a brandy version of the Daiquiri, balancing the warmth of cognac against sharp lemon and sweet orange. Crisp, tart and elegant, it is sometimes served in a glass with a sugar-crusted rim, and it remains a touchstone of the brandy-sour tradition.
