Shirley Temple

The Shirley Temple is the classic non-alcoholic "mocktail" — a tall, fizzy, rose-pink drink of ginger ale (or lemon-lime soda) tinted and lightly sweetened with a dash of grenadine and finished with a maraschino cherry. Named for the 1930s child film star, it was conceived as a special-occasion drink to hand a child while the adults had their cocktails, and it remains the archetypal kids' restaurant order. It is sweet, bubbly, bright red-pink and entirely alcohol-free, which is exactly the point.

A Shirley Temple smells and tastes frankly sweet and fruity: the grenadine leads with a candied pomegranate-red-fruit note and the cherry echoes it, over the dry, spicy prickle of ginger ale fizz (or the cleaner lemon-lime sweetness if that base is used). It is bubbly, lightly tart at the edges from the soda's acidity, and finishes sweet, with no bitterness, fat or alcohol — a soft drink built to read like a cocktail.
