The shea nut is the oil-rich seed of the African shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa), a slow-growing savanna tree that ranges in a broad belt across sub-Saharan Africa. Its kernel is pressed and rendered into shea butter — a creamy, ivory vegetable fat used for thousands of years as a cooking oil and skin balm, and today the basis of a major cosmetics and confectionery ingredient.
