Sea Grape

Coccoloba uvifera · Tropical fruit

Sea grape (Coccoloba uvifera) is the grape-like fruit of a sprawling coastal tree in the buckwheat family (Polygonaceae), native to the beaches and dunes of the tropical Americas and Caribbean. Borne in long, drooping clusters that ripen unevenly from green to deep reddish-purple, each leathery-skinned fruit wraps a thin band of sweet-tart, plum-like pulp around one large stone, and is eaten fresh or cooked down into jelly and wine.
