Scofflaw
The Scofflaw is a Prohibition-era sour built on rye whiskey and dry vermouth, brightened with fresh lemon and a dash of grenadine and orange bitters, shaken hard and strained up into a stemmed glass. Rosy-pink and tart-sweet, it was invented in 1924 at Harry's New York Bar in Paris and named — with a wink — after the American word coined to shame those who flouted the alcohol ban back home.

Pale pink-orange in the glass, the Scofflaw smells of bright lemon and sweet-tart pomegranate grenadine over the peppery grain of rye whiskey and the crisp, herbal, wine-like lift of French vermouth, all lifted by a fragrant twist of lemon oil and a dash of orange bitters. On the palate it is a balanced sour — sharp lemon acidity set against a modest grenadine sweetness — with spicy rye warmth, a dry aperitif backbone from the vermouth, and a clean, tart, lightly spiced finish at around 20 percent alcohol in the glass.
