The saskatoon berry (Amelanchier alnifolia) is a small, dark-purple pome borne in clusters on a hardy North American shrub of the rose family. Despite looking and eating like a blueberry, it is in fact a tiny apple relative, and its sweet flesh carries a distinctive nutty, almond-like flavour from the seeds.
