Rob Roy

The Rob Roy is a stirred, spirit-forward classic — in effect a Manhattan made with Scotch whisky in place of rye or bourbon — built from blended Scotch, sweet (red) vermouth and a dash of aromatic bitters, stirred down cold and served straight up with a cherry. It is amber and clear, rich and softly sweet, the malty, sometimes lightly smoky character of the Scotch rounded by the herbal, wine-sweet vermouth. Created at the original Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan in 1894 and named for a Broadway operetta about the Scottish folk hero Rob Roy MacGregor, it is one of the enduring whisky cocktails of the classic canon.

30% ABV
A clear amber stirred cocktail of roughly 30 percent alcohol, spirit-forward and only lightly sweet, led by the malty and sometimes faintly smoky character of blended Scotch and rounded by herbal, wine-sweet vermouth. A dash of aromatic bitters adds a spiced, herbal complexity and a touch of colour; the whole drink is silky and warming, with oak and dried-fruit depth and a long, gently bittersweet finish rather than a fresh or fruity one.
