Red Hook

The Red Hook is a modern Brooklyn variation on the Manhattan — rye whiskey stirred with Punt e Mes and maraschino liqueur, strained up into a chilled coupe. Deep amber with a red-tinged cast, it trades the sweet vermouth of a Manhattan for the bittersweet Punt e Mes and a measure of cherry-scented maraschino, making a spirit-forward, bittersweet sipper named for the Brooklyn waterfront neighbourhood.

Deep amber with a faint red cast, the Red Hook smells of spicy rye and dark marasca cherry, with the almond-nutty lift of maraschino over the bittersweet gentian-and-orange depth of Punt e Mes. On the palate it is spirit-forward and bittersweet — the peppery, warming rye framed by a rounding cherry sweetness and set against a bracing, faintly cola-like vermouth bitterness — with a nutty almond edge, a whisper of woody spice and a long, dry, gently bitter finish at around 28 percent alcohol in the glass.
