The quahog is a thick-shelled, edible saltwater clam (Mercenaria mercenaria) native to the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of North America. Sold under size-graded names — littleneck, topneck, cherrystone and chowder — it is eaten raw on the half-shell, steamed, or chopped into the famous clam chowders of the American Northeast.
