The Mirabelle is the smallest and sweetest of the European plums — a marble-sized, perfectly round golden-yellow fruit, often freckled with red on its sunny cheek, that tastes intensely honeyed and floral when ripe. Picked over a fleeting late-summer window, it is the prized fruit of Lorraine in north-eastern France, where it is eaten fresh, baked into tarts and distilled into a celebrated eau-de-vie.
